April 1-2 – Maundy Thursday and Good Friday Sermons

MAUNDY THURSDAY

The sermon for Maundy Thursday using this text from Zechariah 9:11–12: “As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.” The Lord God promises that blood will free us from the waterless pits in our lives. On this night when our Lord Jesus Christ institutes the Holy Supper for us, He fulfills the blood of the covenant God had made with His people; a blood covenant that now continues to us today, because it is the blood of Jesus that covers a multitude of sin.

“Covenant Blood” – Zechariah 9:11-12

GOOD FRIDAY

God is dead. It’s a strange thought, yet a tragic reality. But it was for our good, for when God dies, so does sin, even the sin we hide and the sin that tries to define us. All sin is borne by the Son of God, so that we would be alive in Him come Easter morning. The sermon is based on this text from Zechariah 12:10. “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.”

“God is Dead” – Zechariah 12:10

March 28 – Palm Sunday

The Divine Service for Palm Sunday (March 28, 2021). Have you ever had expectations that didn’t match up with reality? On this Palm Sunday, the prophecy of Zechariah 9 is fulfilled in Christ’s humble ride into Jerusalem. The people expected something Jesus didn’t deliver. But Jesus delivered exactly what they – and you – need: salvation.

March 24 – Lent Midweek service

This is the final Wednesday night Lent service. Zechariah continue to proclaim that God’s kingdom comes to us through a redeeming refinery flowing from the fountain of Jesus. Augustus Toplady’s hymn, “Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me” summaries the only sane response to Zechariah 13:1–“Foul, I to the fountain fly, wash me Savior or I die!”

March 21 – Fifth Sunday in Lent

The Divine Service for the Fifth Sunday in Lent (March 21, 2021). Jesus is a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. What does this mean? Pastor Augustine unpacks the text from Hebrews 5 to answer that question and help us to know that we also belong to a royal priesthood – the priesthood of the baptized – priests in the order of Jesus!

March 17 – Lent Midweek service

This week’s theme from the Lent series on the book of Zechariah: “First secure your own oxygen mask.” This directive is familiar to anyone who travels on commercial airplanes. This is also Zechariah’s decree for us—today! As we breathe in the oxygen of the Gospel, we can then help others get set up with it, too!

March 14 – Fourth Sunday in Lent

The service for the Fourth Sunday in Lent (March 14, 2021). God’s Word for this Sunday is filled with His grace that lifts us up from the troubles and trials of life, the struggles of body and soul caused by sin. We are lifted up because Christ Jesus was lifted up – on the cross – for you and your salvation. Believe in Him, and you will be delivered from this world of darkness and death to the light and life of Christ!

March 7 – Third Sunday in Lent

The service for the Third Sunday in Lent (March 7, 2021). The churches in the first century were not so different from ours in the 21st century. Christians have been described as fools for believing in Jesus. The world pushes wisdom that might make us feel good, but ultimately does not save. Only the foolishness of the cross saves us. The cross reveals the wisdom of God for forgiveness and eternal life. With God’s wisdom in our hearts, we can be fools for Jesus in this life knowing we will be with him for eternity.

March 3 – Lent Midweek service

This week’s theme as we continue our Lenten journey through the book of Zechariah: Satan accuses Joshua, the High Priest. All seems lost until the LORD’s Messenger appears. Our Lord Jesus Christ silences Satan—for Joshua and for us!
