April 17 – Easter Sunday

The Divine Service for the Feast of the Resurrection of Our Lord – April 17, 2022

“My Bones Don’t Belong Here” – Joshua 24:29-33, Luke 24:1-12

Where will you be buried? For some that question is easy, for others it is an unanswered question. Joseph lived in a foreign land most of his life, but did not want to be buried in Egypt. He commanded the family before his death, “My bones don’t belong here in Egypt. They belong in the Promised Land!” And just as Jesus’ bones did not belong in His grave, neither do the believers’ bones belong in theirs. For in Christ, we shall arise to glory and leave our graves empty! We know this because Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed! Alleluia!

May 16 – Seventh Sunday of Easter

The Divine Service for the Seventh Sunday of Easter (May 16, 2021). The Easter season concludes today with a section of Jesus’ High Priestly prayer. He prays that we be in the world, but not of the world; that we be sanctified (made holy) by the Word, not doing the unholy things of the world, the devil, and our own sinful desires that lead us to self-righteousness or despair. Thanks be to God, Jesus never stops praying for us and forgiving us!

May 9 – Sixth Sunday of Easter

The Divine Service for the Sixth Sunday of Easter (May 9, 2021). What does the fruit of faith look like? The account of Peter’s God-given vision and change of heart shows us that faith looks and sees like God does. It sets aside our sinful partiality to embrace God’s perfect impartiality that sees our sins no more because Jesus has covered them in His blood. What a gift to share to all peoples, languages, ages, and nations!

May 2 – Fifth Sunday of Easter

The Divine Service for the Fifth Sunday of Easter (May 2, 2021). We celebrated the confirmation of five youth confirmands in the service today. They were connected to the Vine in their baptism and now confessed that saving faith before God and the congregation. Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Confessing Jesus is proof that you are connected to the vine. As a branch, the more you take in Jesus, the more fruit you bear!

April 25 – Fourth Sunday of Easter

The Divine Service for the Fourth Sunday of Easter (April 25, 2021). It is Good Shepherd Sunday where Jesus reveals the meaning of Psalm 23 as He proclaims “I am the Good Shepherd” (John 10:11). Jesus lays down His life for the sheep in order to save us from death and hell. But He takes it back up again so that He can always be our Shepherd who leads us to the green pastures and still waters of His love and mercy. There we are confident in our salvation because Christ is risen from the dead. If death could not hold Him, it cannot hold you as His beloved sheep!

April 18 – Third Sunday of Easter

The Divine Service for the Third Sunday of Easter (April 18, 2021). This service marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s famous “Here I Stand” speech before the Roman Emperor, Charles V. Yet Luther was only following in the footsteps of the Apostles, and even Christ Himself, who stood firm on the Word of God as the only source of authority worth listening to. We are also empowered by the Gospel – in Christ crucified and risen – to say “Here I stand” when confronted with the choice to confess the truth or give in to the devil and his lies.

April 11 – Second Sunday of Easter

The service for the Second Sunday of Easter (April 11, 2021). Do you get tired of the same ol’ story? Every year on this Sunday we hear – again – the story of “Doubting Thomas.” Why do we need to hear about Easter again? Because what we need to hear is that Jesus is risen! We need to hear “Peace be with you.” Again and again. With God’s peace, there is forgiveness and hope and joy. And that’s something we could use a lot more of these days!

April 4 – Easter Sunday

The Service of the Word for Easter Sunday – The Feast of the Resurrection of Our Lord (April 4, 2021). St. Mark’s account of the resurrection leaves us wondering and wanting for more. It is a “cliffhanger” ending that draws us back for more of God’s Word and promises. Jesus *is* risen from the dead. Even though we do not yet see him, by faith we know the tomb it empty. Jesus lives! And because He lives, He comes to calm our fears and focus our lives to love and serve Him until He brings us to our glorious resurrection!
