What is Confirmation?
Confirmation is a public rite of the church preceded by a period of instruction in which baptized Christians learn about the confession, life, and mission of the Christian Church. Note: Prior to admission to the Lord’s Supper, it is necessary to be instructed in the Christian faith (1 Corinthians 11:28). The Rite of Confirmation provides an opportunity for the individual Christian, relying on God’s promise given in Holy Baptism, to make a personal public confession of the faith and a lifelong pledge of fidelity to Christ. (from Luther’s Small Catechism with Explanation (St. Louis, MO: Concordia Publishing House, 2017), 51.)
Adult Confirmation classes are available from the Pastor on an individual or small group setting. This class can vary from person to person depending on their faith background. Full class instruction typically runs 12 weeks and provides a comprehensive foundation of the Christian faith in the Lutheran tradition. Current members of the congregation are invited to the group setting as a faith-refresher course.
Youth Confirmation – Youth confirmation is a wonderful time of faith building and fellowship to prepare them for life in the congregation and the worthy reception of the Lord’s Supper. This class is typically a two-year program taught by the pastor at Immanuel along with parental support at home. Students are best prepared to enter confirmation class through regular attendance at worship and Sunday School (or students in our Lutheran School). Being familiar with the rites and rituals of worship, able to recite the Lord’s Prayer, and having a general knowledge of important Bible stories and people are important aspects of a child’s faith formation and an indicator of readiness for further instruction (catechesis) in the Christian faith.
Without these important pieces in place, the pastor may adjust the student’s schedule to incorporate these foundational elements along with teaching the Christian faith from Luther’s Small Catechism. This will likely extend the class time to more than the typical two years. Students who attend the Lutheran School may have alternate and possibly shorter schedules, subject to pastor and parental discussion and agreement.
