Feb 20 – Seventh Sunday after Epiphany

The Divine Service for the Seventh Sunday after Epiphany (February 20, 2022)

“Love Your Enemies” – Luke 6:27-38

Jesus continues preaching His sermon on the plain to teach us they way that He will walk to the cross. He will love His enemies. He will turn the other cheek. He will not judge and will allow Himself to be judged on our behalf. What amazing love God shows us! How can we not try to also love our enemies as Christ has loved them? Even our enemies are people for whom Christ has died. Let us love as God has loved us.

Feb 13 – Sixth Sunday after Epiphany

The Divine Service for the Sixth Sunday after Epiphany (February 13, 2022)

“God’s Power to Bless” – Luke 6:17-26

The crowds that followed Jesus in His early ministry sought His healing hand. Power to heal would go out from His touch. Power to save souls would go out by the words He spoke. May we not seek the power of the world or use that power for sin and evil, but rather let God’s power to bless come into our lives that enable us to live in peace, knowing that our salvation is secure in Christ!

Feb 6 – Fifth Sunday after Epiphany

The Divine Service for the Fifth Sunday after Epiphany (Feb 6, 2022)

“Fear Not, Astonished Sinner” — Luke 5:1-11

There are times in the life of a Christian where you realize you are in the presence of God’s holiness, and it strikes fear into your heart. This is where the Triune God is different. Instead of relishing in our fear and using it to control or destroy us, God astonishes us with His love and mercy. He calms the fear and casts it upon the cross of Jesus that we would know that our sin is forgiven!

Many thanks to Pastor John Fuchs, Emeritus, who leads the service today.

Jan 30 – Fourth Sunday after Epiphany

The Divine Service for the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany (January 30, 2022)

“Loved to be Loving” – 1 Corinthians 12:31a-13:13

What is love? Is it a feeling? A commitment? Or something more? As Christians we know that love comes from God because that what the Bible tells us He is. As we receive God’s gracious love, we use the gift to be loving to others; not to look good so that we might boast in our good deeds, but that in those deeds, God would be glorified as others experience what true love is all about. Love is all about Jesus!

Jan 23 – Third Sunday after Epiphany

The Divine Service for the Third Sunday after Epiphany (January 23, 2022)

“The Shocking Sermon” – Luke 4:16-30

Jesus preaches in his hometown of Nazareth and delivers a sermon that shocks everyone. He is the fulfillment of God’s Word. He is the Messiah! But He is not about to do miracles to prove it. 2,000 years later, people are not so different, even though we know the end of the story. We know that Jesus lived, died on a cross, and rose from the dead. But do we delight in hearing the good news? It is shocking how we respond to God’s grace. But even more shocking is that God never gives up on us! His grace and love never fail, so we can always rely on God to seek forgiveness and strength for living in these troubling days.

We welcome everyone to the beginning of National Lutheran Schools Week! This is an annual celebration of what God is doing in and through Lutheran schools, from day cares and elementary schools, to high schools, colleges, and seminaries. The ILS school children sang at the 10:15 service. Thanks to Mike MacPherson for his recording!

Jan 16 – Second Sunday after Epiphany

The Divine Service for the Second Sunday after Epiphany – January 16, 2022

“Follow the Signs to Jesus” – John 2:1-11

If you have ever done a road-trip, you know you need a good map or guide or GPS to lead the way. But you still have to understand the signs to take the right roads and turns to get to your destination. St. John uses “signs”, which are Jesus’ miracles, to show us the right way to know and understand Jesus as our Lord and Savior. At the wedding at Cana, Jesus saves the best (wine) for last. That is also our hope as a Christian – to follow the signs Jesus lays out for us in His Word so that we get to heaven, where the best is yet to come!

Jan 9 – The Baptism of Our Lord

The Divine Service for the Baptism of Our Lord (January 9, 2022)

“An Open Heaven for You” – Luke 3:15-22

The season of Epiphany begins on January 6 when the Church observes the coming of the Magi to worship baby Jesus. This service will incorporate that event along with the main focus on the Baptism of Jesus. Jesus is the gift of the Father to fallen humanity that we would worship Him who is not only our King, but our substitute. In baptismal water, Jesus has no sin to remove, but He is anointed to be our sin-bearer. Just as Jesus saw heaven open, so it is in our baptism that heaven is opened to those who now bear the name of Jesus. May we never lose our faith in the one with whom the Father is well pleased!

Jan 2 – 2nd Sunday after Christmas

The Divine Service for the Second Sunday after Christmas (January 2, 2022)

“In My Father’s House” – Luke 2:40-52

We find Jesus at 12 years-old in his Father’s house. No, not the house of his earthly step-father, Joseph, but his heavenly Father’s house – the holy temple in Jerusalem. There he engaged the wisdom of God found in the Scriptures. By the grace of God, may we also resolve to be where God’s truth is found as we gather to hear His wisdom found in Word and Sacrament!

The birth of Jesus ushers in a most extraordinary time. Christmas isn’t ordinary for us, nor is it for God. For in the birth of Jesus, God does a most extraordinary thing. He bursts into this world in order to save it! Merry Christmas!
