September 13 – Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

The service of the Word and Prayer for the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost (September 13, 2020). The theme of forgiveness continues this week as we ponder how we react when someone sins against us. We easily seek forgiveness for the “little” sins we commit, but it’s much harder to forgive the “big” sin someone has done to me. Thanks be to God we have a bigger Savior who forgives and heals our wounded hearts that we can also forgive from the heart.

September 6 – Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

The service of the Word and Prayer for the Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost (September 6, 2020). Forgiveness is not an easy thing but empowered by Christ it is a possible thing to do. The energy which makes forgiveness possible for a human being flows from the cross, not from any innate ability we may have. Many thanks to Rev. John Fuchs for providing the message today!

August 30 – Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

The service of the Word for August 30, 2020, the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost in the liturgical life of the Church. The theme for the day is “Christ be my Leader” from the Gospel reading of Matthew 16:21-28. The Christian life is one of taking up the cross of Christ and following Jesus. And when our footsteps wander off our Lord’s path, which is often, Jesus brings us back with His call to repent and receive His love and forgiveness.

August 2 – Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

The service of the Word and prayer for the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost. Here is a summary of the Word of God proclaimed in this service:

Christ Jesus, the Living Bread from Heaven, Feeds the Children of God.

By the Gospel of “the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever” (Rom. 9:5), we are “the children of God” (Rom. 9:8).  Therefore, “listen diligently,” and “hear, that your soul may live.” By His sacrificial death in His flesh and blood He has made “an everlasting covenant” for us. Since He now calls us to Himself, we come to Him “and eat what is good, and delight … in rich food” (Is. 55:2–3). He has come with divine compassion to save us from sin and death and to feed us with Himself. As our Lord Jesus once took bread, “said a blessing,” broke the loaves, “and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds” (Matt. 14:18–19), He also now takes bread, blesses it by His Word to be His very Body, and distributes it to His Church by the hand of His called and ordained servants. Just as “they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces,” there is more than enough for His whole Church to eat and to be satisfied (Matt. 14:20).
